midnight sun

Last night, the shortest night of the year,  I joined a group going up on the chair lift to the Skystation, 900 meters above sea level, this is used in the winter so people can get a good view of the aurora borealis.
In summer it is just the starting point for a walk to the top of the mountain  Mount Nuolja, which is another 2km to the top.

Our guide was great, she encouraged all of us to attempt the walk to the top...we all made it!It was so worth the effort, walking through snow, over slippery rocks and boggy peat to get to the summit at midnight and see the beautiful midnight sun.

Our guide then produced some goodies from her rucksack...2 bottles of bubbly, olives, cheese, Reindeer - cured and sausage and Moose sausage...I tried it all and my favourite was Moose sausage.. a bit like salami and vert tasty! My knees were very unhappy on the way down but a hot chocolate in the Skystation before the chairlift down at 1.30am was a reward.

This was one of the best experiences of my life..truly amazing!

Monday 20 June 2016

arrived in Abisko..Arctic circle.

After a 17 hour overnight train journey I finally arrived in Abisko.
We were greeted by a snow flurry just to remind us we were in the Arctic circle!
The weather brightened up after I settled into my hostel, so off I went for a short hike.Clean crisp air and only the sound of birds....bliss! The view of snowy mountain tops surrounded me and all my stress melted away.
